恥ずかしながら、「皇孫」という言葉があることを私は知りませんでした（→国語辞典 ）。

いやもちろん、「全日本愛瓢会」なるヒョウタン愛好家団体があることも、なぜか秋篠宮殿下がその名誉総裁であることも知りませんでしたが…。

もとの日本語は「人命にかかわることはなるべく考えないようにして、目をそむけていた」。
turn a blind eye、面白い表現ですね！
なぜ eye が単数形かというと、「片方の目をつぶって、そのつぶったほうの目を向ける」の意味だからだそうです。

上記の「片方の目を～」という説明は E-DIC に書いてありました。
いいですよー、E-DIC。安いわりに、普通の辞書にはない情報がたくさん載っています。

なるほど、shun ってこういうところで使うのか、と思いました。危険だから避けるわけじゃなくて、「どうも億劫」って感じでしょうね。

ちなみにこのニュースは、ケータイ用の新しいソフトの話題。

だそうです（どんな意味かは、上の写真を1秒以上ご覧になるとわかります(^^)）。


いまだになじめないんですが、NHKのイギリス人ナレーターは data を「ダータ」と発音するんですよね…。辞書を見ると、たしかにそういう発音もアリなんですけど。

「乾電池」は和英辞典だと dry battery としか書いてありませんが、household battery（一般家庭用の電池）とも表現できるんですね。とくにこのニュースは、「ごくありふれた電池で」という点が伝えたいポイントなので、household batteries と言ったのでしょう…。

「○○ミス」は便利な日本語ですけど、ひと工夫しないと英訳できないんですね。
今回のニュースでは malfunctioning program と defective program を交互に使っていました。

エレベーターって、昔はプログラムなんか無しで普通に動いてましたよねぇ…。
