「アフターサービス」を英語で言うと…？

・ongoing ： 継続している、継続的な
・after-sales service ： アフターサービス


「アフターサービス」は和製英語で通じません。
service 単独でも「アフターサービス」を意味することが多く、とくに動詞の場合は service だけで「アフターサービスする」の意味。


ongoing のアクセントは、たいがいの辞書だと「前」 しか書いてありませんが、アメリカ人は「後ろ」 に置くこともあるようです。
NHK はイギリス人なので「前」でした。

98 と Me は来月11日でおしまい。
98 はそろそろ仕方ないにしても、XP Home があと2年半でサポート打ち切りとはビックリです。なぜもっと騒動にならないのかな…？

ラベルには「使用期間５～６カ月（it'seffective for five to six months）」と書いてあるのに、実験の結果、冷蔵庫の機種によっては「２カ月ほどで効果が無くなる（the product lost its effectiveness in removing smells afterabout two months）」ことがわかったそうです。


deodorant は、英英辞典で見ると

a chemical substance that you put on the skin under your arms to stop you from smelling bad

なので、体臭用のものに限られるようです。てことは、和英辞典の「脱臭剤」に deodorant と出ているのはマズイですね…！

シンドラー社製エレベーターがある市営住宅の住人のコメント「乗るたびにドキドキして…」の英訳です。

nerve-racking は、nerve-wracking とwを入れたつづりでも可。
なかなか聞き取れなくて苦労しました。
記憶に残るように、ネット上で収集した用例を挙げておきます。

・It's a wonderful experience but it's nerve-racking at the same time.（素晴らしい体験だが、ドキドキ体験でもある）

・It's nerve-racking enough going to live in a foreign country without knowing what it's like.（予備知識なしで外国に住むとなると、内心ビクビクものだ）

・It's nerve-wracking being a dad.（父親業は神経が疲れる）

の意味あり。a drugs ring（麻薬組織）とかよく出てきます。


マリキ首相の声明の出だしが印象的でした。
　"Today, al-Zarqawi was eliminated."
まぁ、アラビア語で何と言ったのかはわかりませんが…。

「異音」を英語で言うと…？

・rumbling ： ゴロゴロ、ガタガタいう音


圧死事故を起こしたのと同じ、シンドラー社製のエレベーターが設置されている東京工業大学の学生のコメントです。
日本語では「普段と違う異音がすることがありまして…あのぅ…にぶいブォーッという音…」と言っていましたが、「ブォーッ」は英語にできなかったみたいですね（笑）。


while、when、if などのあとは、わかりきった主語と be 動詞が省略されることがあります。上記の英文だと、he is が省略されています。これ、わりと大事な文法事項です。

しかし誰ですか、「シンドラーのリフト」とか名づけちゃったのは。まったくもぅ、不謹慎な…。

同じ部分を英字新聞 Mainichi Daily News では
"I made a mistake from a lack of understanding even though I'm a professional."
と訳していました。わかりやすいけど、面白味はないですねぇ。


逮捕前の会見で好き放題しゃべってくれたおかげで、各紙の英訳を読み比べるのが楽しかったです。ためになる表現もいろいろ。

たとえば、The Daily Yomiuri の見出しは
"Murakami Ready to Face Music"

声に出してみると、じつにゴロがいい。うまい訳ですねー！

「ペット可マンション」を英語で説明すると…？

「ペット可物件」は、やっぱり説明的に訳すしかないようですね。
ちなみに apartment は「賃貸マンション」。


一方、ペット可の問題点については、こんな説明がありました。
